Yes, there's an official "sixth taste"!

And it tastes amazing.

So we know the universally recognized five tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami (the last one maybe not quite).

There's a sixth recognized taste for Taiwanese people. Like all cliché romances, you taste it in the air. And the further south you go, the stronger the taste.

It looks something like this (true story) :

I ordered shaved ice (see this post) and got to choose the topping. I couldn't decide between toppings A and B, struggling for a few seconds before picking A.

The owner says "You like B as well? Here you go."

Then he scoops a good portion of B. And suddenly I had both!
